What is more convenient to bring on a plane?

I am traveling next month and I definitely need something more convient to bring on the plane. I traveled in january and just used a cute shoulder bag from target. I am looking at buying an under armour or north face back pack. Mainly because we will be hiking where we are traveling.

You can always put your purse inside the backpack. Two bags in one! Lol

If its a pretty long flight you should be allowed a carry-on item AND your purse.. Every flight I've been on I've had a back pack and a purse! My mom even had a small suitcase and it was her carry-on along with a big ass purse.
