When Should I Get The Epidural during labor

Question

At what cm should I ask for the epidural?Since this is my first child I want to enjoy it. I want my epidural to work while I'm having birth just incase I rip I won't feel them stitching me up.  When should I ask for the epidural and how long do it last ?

I got my epidural at 9cm because I couldn't handle the pain anymore. Most hospitals as long as you can sit still for it you can get one.

Most of the time, if you don't have complications or are high risk, you won't even get admitted until you are at 4 cm. Once you are admitted you can get the epidural. I was told that I had until 7 cm to get it back when I gave birth to my son.

You can't get it until you're 4cm and you can't get it after 5cm

I think it depends on the hospital. My first daughter i had it at 4 cm, my second at 6, and ive had friends whove had theirs at 8cm.

Most women don't rip unless the baby has a large head. Even then it's smaller than your finger nail. They gave me an episiotomy with my first and only need 2 stitches afterwards.

I got mine at 4 cms which I probably won't do for my next child because I ended up being in labor for 13 hours just to push for 9 mins lol and mine had like a button where I could administer more if I was in pain at all so idk exactly how long it lasted. I only tore because the doc had to go in with his hand and take out my placenta because it detached from her cord
