Dry nipples?

So the past like week to week 1/2 my nipples ha e been overly dry. Like to the point that they hurt because they are so dry. Yesterday by boyfriend noticed it and I lotioned them up. But this morning they were dry again do I put lotion on them again. What could be the cause? I don't believe I'm pregnant so could it be my birth control doing this?
