What to do about a broken toe????

My boyfriends toe looks broken. At night in the dark he accidentally rammed his pinkie toe into the legs of a chair. It's severely bent in a strange way, a little red. He says it hurts to walk. He's not crying or anything but its clearly painful. From what we've been told, you just take care of a broken toe at home. Tips? :(
