I haven't given birth yet but the hospital I'm delivering at rarely does them anymore. At the birthing class I took the nurse put it this way. Say you have a piece of fabric. Pull and stretch on it. Kinda hard to rip right? Now let's say you make a little cut at the top of that same piece of fabric. Pull on it now. Rips pretty easily. It's the same principle with episiotomies. Even if you do tear a little bit most of the time it looks worse than what it really is because your skin is so stretched it looks bigger than what it really is. Like when you write something on a balloon when it's blown up and then you pop the balloon and whatever you wrote is actually really tiny looking. If you can avoid getting one I would.

I didn't get one. Where I'm at doctors do them whether you want to or not. Most people get I know get them. I don't think it's always necessary and I think it's an over used practice. Most women that get them don't need them and probably would not even tear. I have a midwife. I had a 8 lbs 8 oz baby,  8 lbs even baby and never tore.
