Rhesus Negative

My doctor told me I am A- blood type. We are still waiting to find out if my husband is positive or negative. If he is positive I have to get shots to prevent my body from producing antibodies that could harm our baby. I want to know, has anyone gone through this? Is my baby in danger? How soon should I get the shot if it turns out my husband is positive?
