Anyone else think the baby shower thing has gone over the top?

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, and no judgement, but wow I feel like baby showers have gotten kind of crazy! I'm seeing pictures of people's showers and they look nicer than some weddings I've been to! It seems like people now get professional maternity pics, and engagement pics, save the date pics, and wedding pics and newborn pics and it just seems kind of... Excessive... to me. I just sort of wonder if our culture has become a little too "me" focused. To each his own of course, I just sort of long for the days when things were simpler and people invested in each other and others a little more I guess...

Everyone's different and that's what makes society and culture very interesting!

I'm not one for a super big baby shower, mine was simple with snacks and we decorated onesies instead of playing games (12 people including myself.) And it was perfect for me whereas I've seen and heard of people having big showers similar to weddings that were perfect for them. If that's the lifestyle they like and they can afford it, why not?

As for professional photos, I'm a photographer and it's the same as the bigger or smaller showers. If you can afford to have professional photos done and would like to, then go for it! For myself, I have paid for maternity photos and will be paying for my wedding photos to be done professionally. Everything else I find isn't as important to me or I can do them myself (like newborn.) It's not so much spending the time and money to focus on "me" but more to celebrate and remember these milestones.

People could say the same thing about going to the salon to get your hair cut or to go to the spa and get a manicure. They are services that aren't necessary but help "me" feel good.

Btw, I'm not trying to bash you, but rather acknowledge your view and share mine too.

My sister in law will be exactly like this! Like a gender reveal, private ultrasound party, baby shower, maternity pictures, painting/belly mold, welcoming home party 😓.  I just registered at target and had some dinners with my friends and family. I didn't even take weekly photos lol

I have to agree with this. It almost feels like many people do it just to show off and post it on their Facebook and Instagram profiles. I agree that our "me" society has become really superficial: it seems it's more about what we can show off than who we really are.

I have all the means to afford a big shower but in mine I only had a few women come over and share an afternoon of tea, cakes and give me all their wisdom about raising a child. It was a lovely afternoon and I learned all about my friends and families tales...I was really afraid of labor and motherhood but simply by talking to the amazing women I was surrounded by made me realize that I can do it, too.

I got a few little gifts, but nothing above 5 euros and they were more symbolic than anything, I literally asked for no presents. I am blessed to have everything I need, my baby will have that too. And I think this is true for most moms in Glow (we're all holding a smartphone with access to the Internet for starters!!)

But there are so many moms that can't even bring a baby in safety to this world, they have no sanitary conditions or they can't even see a doctor. And there are also so many moms that have been victims of rape and still love the babies they are carrying. The UN counts more than 200k children that have been born from rape, just in Congo alone!! So I picked a charity that looked after war children and I asked my guests to donate if they wanted to (instead of buying me gifts.)

I am not being judgemental on anyone who wishes to spend tons on their showers. I just think this is so superfluous in the big scheme of things. We need to stop taking things for granted and be more thankful for what we got. I hope my little girl won't grow in a world full of narcissism and shallow relationships, I too wish we went back to the times where our relationships mattered more than our pictures on the timelines of our social profiles...

I am so sick and tired of seeing post like this. If you prefer a simple life, simple shower, simple this and that- live your life simply. Why do you care what others are doing? Seriously? If a person chooses to have a lavish shower God damn it, its that persons choice. Does that affect you? Or your simple living? Seriously .....  FYI I had a lavish baby shower and I would do it ALL over again 🙂 you know why? Because it's what I wanted!

My mom threw my baby and I a "lavish" shower. In no way was it over to top crazy, but my mom went out and got fancy balloons, a professional cake, and did all the things she wanted. Which I was completely okay with. My mom loved being able to do that for me since she wasn't able to do much when I got married. I think baby showers should be a gift. The one giving/throwing the shower decides how "lavish" it should be.

I think it's a personality thing. That, and many people just like putting on showers and doing all those cutesy things. That's totally not my choice, but props to those that enjoy and have/make the time to do those things. I asked to just have a nice laid back bbq with family and friends, because that's just my style. To each their own, amiright?

Life is too short to not make every little moment AMAZING. Let people do what they want. If you have the money to do it then why not. I would get pictures for every occasion if i could. I love having them afterward.

Right! It's really not that serious for all of that. I'd prefer recieving a few things for my baby after the baby is born. Besides half of those items aren't going to be used anyway. These babies grow fast so these items will just sit there with tags still on them.

Yes. Alot of ppl are going all out. Things aren't as simple as they used to be. But I also think everyone has their own reasons for going over the top. If that's how ppl choose to spend their money then to each its own.
