Blood clots in lungs?

One of my 6 sisters just called me to tell me that another one of our sisters is in the hospital with 20 blood clots in her lungs. I  freaking out I am so worried for her. She is only 33 years old and very healthy. Anyone out there have experience with this? Luckily she is a nurse so she knew something wasn't right. Any advice or reassurance would be welcomed !

I had a blood clot in my lung. Ended up being factor five mutation. Basically just means you clot more than a normal person. I was in the hospital for a week on blood thinners and a heart monitor. I was lucky the my blood clot stayed put in my lungs and didn't migrate more. Your sister will probably get ultrasounds done on her legs to ensure more clots aren't being created. It's a scarey time but the hospital did take good care of me and I haven't had an issue since. I was put on blood thinners for a year after the incident, but I only had one clot. I was on birth control at the time and immediately taken off as this helps aid clots when you have this mutation. This is also hereditary and everyone in the family will need to be tested for it.  I'm not sure if this is the same thing your sister has but this is my experience. She will be fine, but will probably have to be on blood thinners for the rest of her life. Since she's young and otherwise healthy and had a high number of clots, I would suspect a clotting disorder, even an MTHFR mutation. So she needs to be tested for clotting disorders, which I'm sure they will test her. But I also suggest you and your other sisters be tested too, as it is often genetic. Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Well her secret is out. She is 10 weeks pregnant! I am relieved to know its not a lifetime thing although the will most likely be on blood thinners the rest of her pregnancy

The fact your sister caught it and is now in the hospital is very good. It's when you don't catch them and they spread to other organs is when it gets very dangerous. My dad had a lung clot that started in his leg, traveled to his lung and was millimeters from his heart when he finally got to the hospital. If it hit his heart it would have been game over. I'm sure everything will be okay now that she is getting the care she needs, and I hope they find the cause so that it won't happen again!
