High risk of down syndrome

Alysha • I am a 4th grade teacher married to a special ed teacher. We have a little girl that turned 2 on 5/25 and is going to be a GREAT big sister!

So we were told today that we are at high risk to have a baby with down syndrome. 1:209 chance. We live in a very rural area so our doctor wants us to go to the city to get a better ultrasound done because if it doesn't lower my risk he wants me to deliver my baby at a better hospital because they are at a higher risk of heart problems. So now we are waiting for a phone call from the hospital in Colorado Springs to schedule an ultrasound with them.

Everybody keeps telling me that things will be fine....and that may be true..., but it will be fine with me to have a baby with down syndrome. I have an odd feeling that we will because I feel like God has been preparing us for this for a long time. If He does give us a baby with down syndrome it is because he knows we would be great at raising him/her.

I used to babysit a severely autistic kid when I was 14...He was a ten-year-old, nonverbal, not potty trained, kid named Max who was bigger than I was. I fell in love with him.

My husband was a great general education teacher who was somewhat forced into getting his special education license. He passed the test with flying colors his first try without over taking classes. He got his first job as a special Ed teacher a few months after we had our first child. His first year of teaching he had two boys with down syndrome that he would come home talking about every night. He fell in love with his job (and those two boys) right away and knew instantly that that was his true calling in life.

We have one daughter who is (I don't mean to brag, but...) a genius. She isn't quite two yet and cracks people up constantly with her witty humor. She speaks in full sentences...she started potty training herself at about 8 months old (before she could walk) but didn't completely finish to where we could go on road trips without diapers until she was about 1.5 years old. ...she can say her whole alphabet, can count to twelve (her favorite number is 99 though due to watching The Price is Right with my mom). She is truly a phenomena.

And this is a super strange thing to say, but I just feel like God wanted to show us that we are capable of creating all sorts of children and they are all little miracles. He wanted to give us a super smart child first so that we wouldn't be discouraged. But if our next child is born with down syndrome I will know that it is because God thinks we are great parents and can handle the challenge. He has prepared us well. 😀

No matter what, I cannot wait to bless the world with a beautiful miracle in October. I love him/her already.
