Boyfriend doesn't like my hair!

So I'm an African American female in my mid 20s. My boyfriend is Dominican, late 20s. I want to say he's an awesome guy first off. Last night we had a conversation and he told me that he prefers my hair straight as opposed to the natural way that i wear it, which is big, poofy, afro ponytails, etc. After we got off the phone i found myself hurt for some reason. I don't mind getting it straighten once in awhile but i felt insulted like he won't accept me other wise. When i asked him why straight, he said it should be controlled which hurt even more. I love my hair. I never permed it before and i don't plan on it either. How do i deal with this? Anyone else has have similar problems?
