How to give ex space?

He was the person I went to for everything, he was my best friend. He needs space and time away from me right now and it's so hard for me. I go a couple of days and then I want to talk to him. I want to get back together and in order for him to figure out what he wants I need to give him space. Also, he may realize we are better separated. regardless of the outcome I need to do it but I need help/advice on how to do that. Thanks!
