how many gifts ?

how much is too much? 
•christmas '12 it was just my SD & DH so being the only child she got maybe 6-8?
•christmas '13 my LO was 7 months and I couldn't really get her any gifts (laid off) but we gave both 5-6 gifts each..

here's my question?
HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?
HOW MANY GIFTS SHOULD EACH CHILD GET?

IF YOU CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS- HOW MANY GIFTS FROM SANTA? ?& HOW MANY FROM YOU?

I don't have kids yet, but I've thought of following: 
- 1 thing they really want
- 1 of something useful (not necessarily a toy)
- 1 of clothing (but something they'd want)
- 1 thing that can be shared (board game, tickets to museum)
That's what's from parents/Santa. I'm not a fan of buying just a bunch of stuff.

Something they need 
Something to wear
Something to read
Mine is only 20 months and won't know the difference. Plus our families buy her gifts too. I'm hoping this sets a good precedent for the future, when she wants really expensive toys ;-)

Here's a tip my mom always told me to do when I became a mother (which I did as of February 26 2013.) is to never make all the gift from Santa if you celebrate santa. Because that way if one you your children get a bunch from santa one year and the next year if a parent gets laid off or fincially uneasy and the children don't get much from Santa they won't be disappointed thinking Santa didn't care. My mom alway wrap my Santa gift in a special Santa paper and nothing else was wrapped in that paper. She later told me she always use the whole roll to wrap my Santa gifts that way I wouldn't find the left over paper and catch on since   was a snoop for xmas gifts and still am

I am the oldest of 8 from a mixed family so honestly they would give each of us 8 presents.  That was with my Dad.  With my Mom she would do it based off of a dollar amount not a number of presents, so sometimes one of us would have less to open but that was because some presents were pricier than others.  Both were nice so whichever you do I am sure they will appreciate it!

We have 3 children (1,2,&5)
We set an amount from mommy and daddy and tried to make it as equal as possible in presents. A mixture of toys clothes and books. Now Santa is bringing each child one gift but this is THE BIG gift lol. Like my daughter ( she's 5) wanted a play kitchen set with ( her wording) cups bowls and apples lol. First she failed to mention the kitchen part and was like I want a fake apple lol. Anywho. Santas bringing that.

My parents always set a certain equal amount for each of us kids (I'm one of three) and some were more expensive than others but they tried to keep it as fair as possible x

I don't really put a limit on them. They usually have several but they are the things they want mixed with what they need. I always get them a sheet set in a cool character they like and some clothes/shoes (they need these) then I'll get a toy or video game or something that they really want plus stocking stuffers. I would say they each usually have at lease 12 gifts.
