How to Not Return to Work

CL

I am currently 19+5 with my little girl, and I am not planning on returning to work after she is born. I work in retail loss prevention, and commute an hour each way to work for just enough money to pay for day care. My husband is in the process of selling his car, and once we are free of that payment, my ability to stay at home will be set in stone.

I have worked for my boss since 2010, with a 2 year gap in the middle where I explored other career options and decided to return to my current employer. My boss is kind, he cares about me and my pregnancy, and gives me great performance reviews.

I don't want to promise him that I'll return to work when I leave for 12 weeks and then screw him over, but I don't want to risk losing my insurance for the birth. The maternity leave is unpaid anyways, so I won't lose anything there. I would get any vacation time that I've earned upon resigning.

Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this? Obviously my boss hasn't asked if I plan on returning because I don't think it's legal for him to ask, but I'd like to be able to give him some notice if I can, without screwing me over insurance wise. 😞 I'm in Michigan, btw, if it matters.
