What do you ladies think about uterine massage?

So I've seen a lot of women who recently said that their doctor or midwife performed a uterine massage immediately after delivery. Sometimes before the placenta is delivered, sometimes after. But I keep seeing that it cause excruciating pain, and that women don't understand why this is part of post natal care. What do you all think?

I'm a nurse. We're taught to massage the uterus after birth to help expel clots, return the uterus to normal sign, and it can help us know whether or not you're hemorrhaging or having a complication. It is necessary, although uncomfortable.

It's important and it helps to encourage the uterus to contract in a timely manner so that it does not hemorrhage. I would rather be in some pain than require medical intervention, a hysterectomy and blood transfusion.

It is absolutely necessary and part of a routine check by the nurses. They have to make sure the uterus is properly contracted to stop bleeding. If, when they assess it, it is not properly contracted then they massage it to cause it to contract. It's life saving. I'm an RN and performed this on all new moms during my maternity rotation. Yes, it is painful because the muscle is so tired and sore from delivery, but that is why it is necessary to check it frequently, to make sure it keeps doing what's needed.

A fundus massage is absolutely necessary. It helps expel clots and causes the uterus to contract to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding. Yes it's comfortable, but you could actually die without it.

It's not as torturous as they say. Yeah it hurts but it is tolerable. I wasn't too much of it as a fan but it is very much necessary to expel clots and make sure the placenta didn't leave in pieces.

It's very important as the pp Ally mentioned. Though I have to say I really enjoyed mine! A lot! My mom said she really enjoyed hers to. My midwife looked like we were crazy when we said that.
