My husband thinks i dont care

Ok so my husband and i have been married for three years now. We have been separated since november2015, we have decided to work on our marriage but think its best that we dont live together just yet. He does live next door to me so i see him all the time. But my problem is, is that every time i hug him, kiss him or even tell him i love him his immediate response is "well dont sound too happy about it" or " you sure dont act like you love me" he seems to think i dont care cause i dont give him big hugs or kisses. Thing is i do care i have always cared. How can i get him to realize and understand that i care about him and love him? Now i dont want to believe that the age difference is a problem but a part of me thinks it is. I will be 30yrs old in november and he just turned 23. I really love him and want this to work out. Please help! What can i do?!
