Doctor isn't going to check cervix?!

Question

I asked my doctor when he planned to start checking my cervix and he says that since I will be 36 weeks he isn't going to worry about checking. He states if I went into labor now they wouldn't do anything to stop the birth. My issue is that my fiancé would need a Red Cross message to make it home in time if this baby comes early. If I was super dilated and effaced I want to know so that I can send for the child's father... 
Is it normal for a doc not to check? Would you ask doc to do it anyway? Can't help but feel a bit overwhelmed.

Comepletely normal. The doctors don't want to check because it can induce labor. I only got checked around the 40th week.

You can ask if you want to be checked. My midwives stated that they only did cervix checks if they had a medical reason to or if I requested it. Otherwise they would just let me be.

I only requested to be checked after I lost my mucus plug and had my bloody show earlier that day. I was 38.5 weeks and they told me I was 4cm. Turns out it was a good thing I checked since baby came the following night!

The results from having your cervix checked really is no indication of when you will be going in labor. I had my cervix checked at 36 weeks. I was 1 centimeter. From weeks 37-41 I was 2 centimeters. I had to be induced when I was 41 weeks and 1 day. The day I went in the hospital and they checked me I was still 2 centimeters--and I was even walking 4-5 miles a day.

My roommate from college had her cervix checked one time (she doesn't remember how many weeks pregnant she was it was several years ago) and had dilated 1 centimeter. Three days later she gave birth to her son.

A church member of mine water broke...but when she went to the hospital, she still hadn't dilated at all.

You can tell them your situation and see if in that case they may want to check?  I'm not sure.
