Ring bashing

What's with the ring bashing? Who cares if someone's SO bought them a big ass diamond.... Or got a upgrade..... I've just seen a few people say like "oh the bigger or more expensive your ring is the better chance you have at being divorced" maybe that's just what they like or can afford..... Either way in just wondering
