How to explain to bf why FAM is a legit birth control method?

He says that since my period is irregular sometimes and because "sperm can live inside there for up to 3 weeks" that FAM doesn't work. But I give extra buffer days to account for irregularity and we also use condoms... He wants me to go on the pill, but I don't want hormones. Would love some advice...

FAM works, even WITH irregular periods because it is always based off of the current cycle (not based off of past cycles like other, less effective forms of natural birth control such as the calendar method). FAM will work just fine for people with irregular periods, just as long as their cycles are not shorter than 25 days. It also helps you learn so much about your body. Sperm live in you for 3-5 days and even up to 7 days under the right optimal conditions. FAM can be used for birth control, track periods and help you learn about your body. If you want to use FAM for birth control I would practice it with condoms before relying on it for birth control.

I would only use FAM if a baby wouldn't be a complete disaster to your life. Like, if you use FAM and fail, will you abort? If so, it's not a good idea because, especially with irregular periods, it can fail. My periods are pretty regular (normally a 29 or 30 day cycle) and FAM failed.
