Blood test for sex of baby?

Hey everyone. I feel pretty dumb posting this considering this is baby #2 but I didn't have this done with my first and wanted to learn more about it.

What week is the test done? I'm assuming it's also tied into a few other tests for genetic disorders/abnormalities, correct?

I had blood tests done with my 1st in 2013 but I didn't find out the sex that way so I was wondering if it's normal for doctors to do that or if you have to ask for it.

I had to ask about it and the same day I'd mentioned it, I got it done. It was at my 10 week appointment. My insurance didn't cover it. However, as soon as my doctor found out that my younger sister was born with Turner's, she told me that the office would cover the cost of it so I'm not sure how much the actual fee would have been. I found it to be super beneficial though! I had to tell them yes to let me know the gender as well but that was just a bonus for me. Being able to find out if my sweet little one was going to possibly be born with any genetic abnormalities was a really important thing for me just so that I would have the chance to do some research should anything come back high risk :)

Never hurts to ask for it but I hear that some insurances will cover it others won't. Plus the blood test from what I hear is usually something they will do for women of a certain age and if you have certain conditions that run within the family such as with siblings .

The test is called non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), (brand names materna21 and panorama test). It's for screening for chromosomal problems. It can be done at 9 weeks (the earliest). 
You don't out the sex because some of the disorders are ones that would be attached to the X or Y chromosomes.
It is not offered to all women as usually the 12 who blood work and ultrasound is enough to rule out problems. Women who have had past pregnancies with issues will usually be offered this early test. In Canada it's only covered by provincial insurance if you are one of those women. In the states i have heard the same is true. The test in Canada costs $550.

The test is offered my some doctors it depends on your doctor bit it's done between  I belive 10 to 12 weeks  I am scheduled to have my test done tomorrow  I am 12 weeks

My doctor told us about it at the 8 week appointment, and it would have been given at our 12 week if we have opted to have it done.
