MY BF IS DEPRESSED

My boyfriend and his mom have had money problems. She's single and hasn't found work since they moved here. He recently got a job at a local grocery store to help out. I don't know what happened but he just became more irritated and barely responds. He said he's having trouble finding his place and he feels like he's floating around. And everytime we do talk or I send a text to encourage him, he ignores what I say and talks about the money he's making. I tell him that I'm proud of him, and that's it. When I asked him if he wanted me to stay trying to make him happy, or leave for awhile, or just let him breathe he said he'd like if I stayed. I'm worried about him. I really am. Seeing him this sad and.. hurt just hurts me on a whole new level. I'm confused and I want to know what I can do to cheer him up. I've tried so many things and nothing is working.. I just want him to feel okay again
