How many of you are feeding your newborn formula during the night and breastfeeding during the day ?

Supplementing and substituting are not the same things. Done regularly, that sounds like a sure fire way to damage your milk supply. I am a supplementer myself and I'm all for a bottle of formula every now and then for the sake of my sanity but I'd be cautious about it if continuing to breastfeed is important to you!

Im pregnant with my first so i dont actually have a baby yet. But my midwife told me that people who try that, often regret it because once the baby figures out how easy is it to feed from a bottle, they wont even try the boob..

If you cut out breastfeeding too early you will damage your supply period but to wait a few months before you start something like this.

What would be the reason for doing this? When would you plan to start? Right away or when baby is several months old??

I personally don't think this is a good idea very early on. Maybe many months in but not at the beginning. Your breastmilk is made on a supply and demand basis so if you don't nurse for several hours at a time, your body will take this as a sign that it doesn't need to make as much. Also, most women would be extremely uncomfortable and engorged if they didn't nurse all night. I know lots of moms who had good sleepers and actually had to get up in the middle of the night and pump because they were too uncomfortable to sleep.

Also, as the PP said, if your baby is breastfed it's usually recommended that you don't introduce anything else like a bottle or soother for the first month or so so that breatfeeding can become really well established.

It's a bit hard to answer you question without knowing more details, but I know a lot of moms and I don't know anyone who has done this and I can think of a lot of reasons why it wouldn't be a great idea.

It was recommended for me to supplement with formula with my son. He simply wasn't getting enough from the breast milk.  He had lost about 2 lbs after birth (he was 7.11lbs and went down)

But I always formula fed during the day. I simply found it easier (was a single mama)
