Don't wait for your baby shower to buy things!
The only advice I can confidently give is Buy all the big nessessities in secret then ask for them at your shower.
Example (I did this at 12 weeks) buy a crib but also put it on your registry ... If no one gets it then that's okay! No need to fret you already have it. If they do get it, return one and use that money for the things baby still doesn't have.
Family and friends are 90% of the time gonna get you what they want (even if it's something you say you already have enough of) and maybe 10% will actually get you what you've asked for.
It sucks to have to buy everything the very last months of pregnancy and set it all up. When you could have prevented it by, buying what you can in the beginning and then those last months can be used for saving money for a safety net or spoiling yourselves before the baby arrives.
