Could you be with someone who didn't/doesn't have the same goals as you?

I'm lately finding out that my boyfriend doesn't want the same things as i do in the same time frame. I want kids within the next 5-10 years (ill be 25-29 he'll be 29-33) but he says if he's not "where he wants to be" with his career by then he wouldn't be willing to put it on hold to start a family even if we would be financially able to. Of course i want him to fulfill his dream career but it's so unreliable. He could fulfill it next week or he could be waiting until he's 70 (he's trying to make it big in the arts).

Part of me (the planner inside me) is saying to break it off but another part of me is saying to just see how it goes.
