Is it safe to take Xanax or pain medication in the first trimester?

Docs say nothing at all first trimester and heck no to Xanax the entire pregnancy. Xanax and other benzos can cause massive issues and birth defects. Narcotic pain medication can be used in very very small doses very infrequently later in pregnancy (ex: Prego lady has kidney stones). Those run a high risk of the baby being born addicted if they aren't used as sparingly as possible.

I'm curious about the same thing. I've been on Xanax and hydrocodone for many years and stopped taking any as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I have read that there is no link to pain med and birth defects, just fears of addicted babies. And the doctor said that a panic attack is far more dangerous to the fetus than the Xanax itself.
