Yes, laws vary by state, but a general guideline is openhanded flat on bottom, no objects (paddles, spoons,ect), not hard enough to leave any marks.

Now if the question is, should it be legal? I don't think so. It's ineffective and potentially damaging.

It is legal, and I will do it to my children as a last resort. It worked on me and my brother, and we have an incredibly healthy relationship with our parents

Uch its horrible so many people abuse it! its also usually not effective. I was spanked but in a physically abusive way basically for no reason its really damaging but whatever make your own mistakes.

Anything more than transient marks will get you in trouble, as it should. If there's a little red mark that goes away in a few minutes, it is not against the law. Like if you slap the back if a hand or open hand swat to the butt.
