Can I feed on one side to let a nipple heal?

Baby was in the NICU for his first 3 days of life so we are a little behind on breastfeeding. He's 6 days old today. We are working on it though! In the beginning though, his latch was awful. Maybe because he had a bottle for 3 days in the NICU? Anyways, we got a nipple shield and things are MUCH better except that he basically demolished my right nipple. It stings so bad when he feeds from it. I can see the place it's bruised. My question is, can I breastfeed only on the left for a day or two to let it heal? I don't want to get lopsided. Lol. Any suggestions from other breastfeeding moms? He really squishes this nipple when he feeds from it. It looks flat on one side when he's done. Left side is perfect. No pain at all. What's going on here??
