Is Christianity a religion?

My pastor said we are christians, not religious. How do you feel about it?

Christianity is labeled as a religion because this world survives on labels. However, as Christians, we don't see ourselves as religious because a religion demands a group of people making efforts to reach a non-trascending god. Usually religion is all about what a human can do to reach a deity or human efforts that could buy humanity a spot in paradise. Our story is different. It's about how God loved us so that He reached out for us. He was the One who said, "You failed me and all but I still love you unconditionally, so I'll make a way so that you can all be with me."

Although Christianity is a religion, it's not our goal to be "religious" but to have a relationship with our Lord and Savior.

Well, most people think of religion as a set of moral codes you have to follow to be a good person. In that case, Christianity is not a religion. Jesus didn't lay out a moral code for us, instead He gave us His life so that we might express the divine nature in our behavior (2 Peter 1:4). It's about getting close to him, receiving God's grace and growing in it. That is my understanding from what I've been taught as a new believer, anyway.

Yes, Christianity is a religion. We have a structure to adhere to, though many denominations do not recognize this anymore. Religion should be filled with spirituality otherwise it is just legalism.

Not sure???? This is a tough one for me simply because different denominations call themselves Christians. Ex. (Mormons) I am a Christian! I believe Jesus died on the cross and rose again! I believe in the trinity! I believe the Holy Bible is the truth! Maybe, I'm religious!?

The scriptural book of James tells us True religion is to look after orphans and widows and keep ourself from being polluted by the world. So a religion, faith in Christ, obedience to his ways and a trust in his atonment for us.

To call it a relationship works well with Christians, but to the rest of the world Christianity is a religion.  Calling it a relationship is just Christianese and I believe it causes separation in many cases.
