First doctor's appointment question

I just got my BFP this morning, so I called my doctor this morning to schedule an appointment. The receptionist said my doctor won't meet with me until I'm 8 weeks to confirm pregnancy. This seems like a long time to wait. I realize I might be jumping the gun. Is waiting 8 weeks just standard?
