brown period blood?

I woke up this morning and went to the bathroom and when I wiped my period blood was brown. Idk what that means. someone please explain

I know this happened to me sometimes when I'd miss a day of my birth control, and cause my cycle to be irregular. 
But I've also had it happen off bc; it's pretty natural, just a discoloration. It should go away as you really start your flow. If your whole period is brown or irregular in some other way, I'd talk to a gynecologist just in case.
