Sore inside vagina

Any ideas as to why the inside of my vagina is hurting... Normally when I wear a tampon I have no issues and can't feel the tampon inside. However, this particular period I have been extremely sensitive and have felt the tampon inside.. I constantly feel sore and slightly itchy... Any ideas on what could be happening?
