Need help...epidural

I do not want to use epidural when I have my baby but I want to know if via IV I can get some sort of pain med? I'm a FTM and maybe I will want the epidural lol but I want to try my best not to. Doctor is not happy about that, I don't know why. But I want to see if I can get some pain meds instead. Is it possible? Help
