Tongue ties😵😖😡
So this is more of a rant....
So my little one is tongue tied and, after fighting with insurance for two weeks, we were able to get in with a pediatric ENT who "clipped" his tongue for us. I mean it was a battle to get it done. The pediatrician, lactation specialist, and midwife all were very adamant that his tongue tie was too severe to continue working through and could cause speech impediment later down the road. Even with all of there support it took two weeks to get insurance to agree. They lost our paper work, tried to send us 1 1/2 hours away to see get an appointment despite having a specialist less than 5 miles from our home, and called me 3 times a day to tell me the doctors referral was messed up and they couldn't process it for one reason or another. We finally got over that hump and LO has responded well and seems to be clearing the breast more easily, however, we are still having some pain with feeding and he is still feeding for 30 minutes or more on each breast. So we went in for a follow up with pediatrician.
My poor babe had lost almost a pound since birth when he should be around or past his birth weight now. So the doc pulled in the lactation consultant to rule out any further feeding issues after I explained all this. The specialist sends in her trainee. Sweet woman but obviously still in training and not much help figuring out the issue. The doc ropes the lactation specialist into actually coming and looking at what's going on. She pulls his lip up and says, "well he is lip tied too."
Ok, first of all I didn't even know there was such a thing. I am a 2nd time breast feeder who pretty easily made it through the year with my first, so this is not my first rodeo, but lip tied I knew nothing of. Secondly, why has no medical professional by 3weeks old not bothered to look at this kids lip considering he was tongue tied?!? We could have figured this out and had them both taken care of at the same time instead of going back and forth to the doctor.
So I get past my shock and frustration to ask what the plan is. The pediatrician says he wants to give the babe a full week without the tongue tie and see if he is gaining weight on his own. The lactation consultant wants to wait another week as well and see if the lip tie is still causing pain before we decide to take any further action.
I can understand them wanting to wait a week and see what happens, but I am so fed up. I have been tossed around like a ball trying to get my child the care he needs, in the mean time my child is not getting enough to eat and wants nothing more than to nurse. Now they want us to wait yet another week?!? I just want my baby to have what he needs and I don't want to be in pain anymore. I want to breast feed so badly, but if he needs something more or something else entirely then that is what will be done. I mean if he is lip tied today he will be lip tied tomorrow. I am just ready to throw in the towel!!
Any other frustrated Momma's out there???
