My parents accidentally named me Shame.
So, my parents love "unique" and "uncommon" names like a lot of the people on this app. So, in the search for names when they were pregnant with me they settled on the name Shonda. It fits the "unique" and "uncommon" bill for sure. However, they didn't know that in Yiddish, my name means shame. I learned this when I moved to New York and has several people pause and ask me for my name again when I introduced myself. Someone finally told me why. So now, not only do I get to correct people constantly that my name isn't Shanda, or Shawna, or Shondra, I also have to explain to people "no, my parents didn't name me shame on purpose." So, I urge you to do research when you're picking out "unique" and "uncommon" names for your child. Also, my brother is named Kalen, which is traditionally spelled Caelin, and is typically a girl's name. He was accidentally put in a girl's cabin at summer camp. People often think he will be a girl when they hear his name before meeting him. They also think his name is Caitlin. So please, consider the fact that your kid has to live with their name a lot more than you do.
