Ladies, gym?

Question

Who goes to the gym while pregnant? Is it healthy? And what do you do?

I ran on the treadmill until I was 8 months. Also lifted small weights, did the step machine, yoga and floor work. I think it depends on what you are used to doing before getting pregnant. I was doing all that before getting pregnant and just modified it a little after like not pushing too hard while running, not being too strenuous while lifting.

I'm 37 weeks. I was going to the gym 6 days a week before I got pregnant, but I've managed to keep up with 4 days a week while pregnant. I usually do a half hour (closer to an hour on Saturdays) of lighter cardio (elliptical, bike, walking at 3 on a 9 incline) plus one or two body parts lifting for a total of between 40 and 60 sets. Most of my cardio had been running before getting pregnant and I'm not even near the weight I was doing before pregnancy (for example, 225 lb squats vs squats with just a resistance band now). I've been incorporating more stretching than I usually do also. I also have a deskcycle under my desk and cycle at very low resistance 3-4 hours per day throughout my workday. I will say that keeping up with the lifting has helped my arms stay as defined as they were prepregnancy. I find that the hardest things with the gym are 1. Getting myself there and 2. Lifting weights up off the ground! I've gotten so many compliments and positive words of encouragement at the gym while being pregnant by both women and men (and not creepy gym guy comments), and those help, especially if I'm dragging through a workout. I wasn't at my ideal level of leanness prior to getting pregnant (threw my back out, had an ectopic pregnant last June, and then went thru Ivf) so I am hoping to get to being leaner than I was by the time I go back to work.

It's very healthy, provided you already have a good fitness baseline and no risk factors in your pregnancy. I have done spin, yoga and weightlifting classes, elliptical, etc. If something doesn't feel right, I stop doing it. I honestly feel most energized and light in my feet after and during exercising than I do at any other point during the day. If you're unsure, ask your doctor.

As long as you were doing it before pregnancy you can do it while you are pregnant. I still run 4 miles 4 times a week.

I would have but working out would cause pain almost instantly. So I have to stick to walks until after birth :-/ it's safe and healthy but definitely listen to your body
