Sharing my mastitis/abscess story

Rachel
I feel like I should share this story for a warning to everyone who hasn't gone through it and for encouragement to anyone who is going through this! My DD is 6 weeks old, we've had an amazing breastfeeding relationship, we got through the latching issues and nipple soreness the first week, and got into a great rhythm. At 4 weeks I developed a pretty large clogged duct in my right breast, after a week and a half, it was the size of a golf ball. The whole time I did warm compresses, pumped and nursed often, I even put my vibrator on it (per orders from my DD's pediatrician!) and nothing would break it up! It didn't hurt at the time so we didn't really worry. We went to see the pedi and she could not break it up after 30 minutes of plmassage while she was nursing. Over the course of the week I kept continuing the same things I'd been doing, and then over the weekend it began to get a little redder and swell more (it had already been red when j saw the pedi), I was waiting for a fever to appear before I texted the pedi and asked for antibiotics. On Sunday I was so much pain I couldn't let anything touch it, the seat belt made me cry, bras were insanely painful, finally I texted and said I have mastitis. She called in antibiotics and I started them right away. Sunday night things continued to get way worse, I couldn't sleep, the pain was unbearable. I called her office in he morning, she told me to go straight to a breast surgeon after I texted her pictures of the latest swelling and redness. It ended up being abscessed and I had to get my breast cut open about half an inch and drained (incredibly painful- even though they numb it, infected tissue doesn't absorb the numbing medicine very well so you can feel pretty much everything). I've spent the last week bandaging my wound, laying in bed nursing my baby. It was the most painful experience of my life next to delivering my little girl! Anyway, point of the story is a couple things
1. Get rid of those clogs while they're small, when you first notice them. Feel all over your breasts regularly and make sure you don't feel any lumps or knots.
2. Mastitis does not always come with a fever right away! DONT let it get as bad as I did!!
3. We are still going strong as ever with breastfeeding, we have nursed through the whole process and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon! I haven't supplemented at all, your body IS capable of getting through this!
I'll post pictures below of the swelling and redness before and the wound after surgery.
The last one is pretty gross so watch out!
