Percentiles?

Question

What does it mean when your baby is in the (amount) percentile? I'm 21 weeks and was told yesterday that my baby is a little smaller then average. My baby is in the 27th of 50 percentile. Can somebody explain this is further detail other than the fact the baby is smaller then average?

I've never heard out of 50 personally, my doc always gives it out of 100 but it just means that out of 100 (or 50 in your case) you kid is 27th in size. I always imagine all the babies lined up in order of size. Lol. That's how it was explained to me. It doesn't mean a whole lot, it's just a way of measuring and having and idea of how your baby stacked up to the "average."

It's when they hit 10% or under that the docs usually start to worry about IUGR (intra uterine growth restriction). You're in a good place at 27th percentile. Sweet and petite!
