Florida law 🙄
I want my daughter to have my last name, but of course her father wants her to have his name. I think he will be a good dad, and with the exceptions of his drinking habits I tried to get him to stop, he's been present. We obviously aren't married, and our relationship is not working due to miscommunication, both of our sharp tongues & the drinking.
I'm not trying to give her my name out of spite, but because it's my family's name, it means something important to me (same for him, I know) and I've carried her and (gladly) gave up a lot of things for her. I just don't think it's fair that it's expected for me to give her his name because he's the father.
Florida law is if the parents signing the certificate don't agree, our options are to alphabetically hyphenate or go to court. The names hyphenated would make her name very long and a little ridiculous.
I know, maybe I am being selfish but I'm pretty bummed about this and feel like I'm just going to have to settle. I don't want to go to court over it with s new born baby... Anyone dealt with anything like this?
