Cloth diapers?

Question

Anybody recommend/not recommend cloth diapers? First time mom and wondering if it's worth it to try cloth diapers to save money. Any advice/ hints/ warnings welcome! Thanks in advance! 🙂

We've been using cloth exclusively since our LO was 2 weeks old (he's 8 months now). We absolutely love it. The reason we chose to cloth was because with our first, she was allergic to many different brands of disposables and some brands gave her awful chemical burns. We didn't want to go through that struggle again in case he was allergic to the same chemicals.

I did tons of research before buying and found the FB group Fluff Love & CD Science (they also have a website fluffloveuniversity.com), where I learned even more and was set up with a wash routine specific to my washer by one of the admins.

When we first started off, we bought several different brands and styles to try out. We tried prefolds and covers, all in ones (aio), all in twos (ai2), fitteds with covers, and pocket diapers. For brands we tried Kawaii, Sunbaby, Bumgenius, Dandilion prefolds, Grovia ONE, Rumparooz covers, Funky Fluff, Smart Bottoms, Fuzzibunz, and a few others I can't remember.

After trying them all we found that we LOVE Funky Fluff for during the day and when we go out (especially in the carseat) and we love Grovia ONE for nighttime. We ended up selling  most of the ones we didn't like to buy more of the ones we did.

My advice:  Stay away from any detergents that label themselves as "cloth safe". "Cloth safe detergents are made up of mostly softeners, there for you would have to use way more than the recommended amount to even get your diapers clean. You can use most mainstream detergens, a popular one in the cloth community, Tide Original Powder.

Also, try different brands and styles. There were a few I thought we would like, but turns out, they didn't work out for us.

The great thing about using cloth if your breastfeeding, is you don't have to scrape anything off the diaper before washing them. Breastfed poo is water soluble, meaning it disolves. The only time you need to scrape/rinse, is if baby is formula fed or eating solids.

We love cloth diapering we spent less than $250 on our whole supply of diapers and wipes that will last until she is potty trained. And our water bill has only went up $1 a month. It's worth it and they are hella adorable too.

I'm using prefolds and Thirstie of Alva covers during the day and random pocket diapers during the day.... I think. Baby isn't here yet. Join some Facebook groups and look at you tube videos. It's sooo stressful in the beginning to figure out what will work best for you and then for baby too but in long run I think it will be worth it. Baby will be here in Nov so we shall see. I'm using disposable for newborn stage till he's bigger, my girls are both under 6.5 pounds so I feel like a cloth diaper will not fit properly and I don't want to buy newborn sizes when a one size will work once he's a little bigger.

If you don't mind another FTM chiming in, I always recommend research on which kind of diapers would work the best for you. 
Prefolds with covers are the cheapest, but some people just don't prefer them. 
From a research standpoint, I like the pocket diapers and have began building my stash out of those from different companies. 
I would also recommend looking at your ability to do laundry every two days, both cost wise, time wise and most importantly do you have your own laundry system. In some places the service is cheaper due to higher water/electricity bill.
Some moms prefer cloth strictly at home and use disposables when out and about/vacation/visiting family. That's another thing to consider.
Honestly, I'm looking forward to it.

I plan to now. I didn't with my first but I've heard nothing but good things. Especially how much money they save and they last for years. Find some used ones and get family and friends to help purchase to cut cost. I think the most demanding thing will be the cleansing.

Cloth diapering will save you hundreds of dollars, however you'll want to have disposables at the ready for when you go out of the house, to run errands. Its not for everyone, but it's definitely worth a shot :)

Like another lady suggested I'd suggest looking into styles of cloth diapers to figure out what you best like the sound of.
I'm going with the Flip hybrid diaper, unlike pocket diapers you can use one shell for multiple inserts and then you just change the shell when you have a messy poop or something which cuts costs because inserts are cheaper than shells and you don't need as many shells as you would with pockets which have to be changed every time they are soiled. We also plan to use cloth while out and about too just using wet bags that fit in the diaper bag to store any dirty inserts/shells as otherwise we would need to change baby into disposable every time we stepped out so we didnt have to lug a dirty diaper home which just sounds like more of a hassle and waste. We are also using cloth wipes with a spray bottle solution to dampen.
Only time we are using disposables is the first week until baby's tar poop is done as we don't want it ruining our cloth diapers.
That's the plan anyways haha. We will adjust as we see necessary but my sister who recently had a baby has been following the same plan I also had and it has been working for her so I'm extra confident it will work out. ☺

If you want to save money, definitely do it. They're honestly not that much work once you get used to it.
