Anyone else on iron?

Question

I just got my bloodwork done and found out that I'm anemic and I need to take iron. My doctors suggested I take it for delivery because you lose a lot of blood. Anyway, after I took my pill, my stomach was exetrmely sore to the touch and I've been really uncomfortable since taking it yesterday.  I'm still uncomfortable but I don't think I'm gonna take these pills if they are going to give me this soreness. Anyone else?

I've been on it for a while and feeling the benefits of more energy now. There's 2 different ones (in the uk anyway) sulphate and fumarate. I'm fine with one but not the other so maybe ask your dr about it? Also take with Vit C and not within 2 hours of any dairy. Hope this helps xxxx

I've been taking iron since my first prenatal appointment. It hurts my stomach so bad!!! :( I've tried it at all times the day, with/without food, etc. Before bed has been the best option for me. My dr said its okay since this is the only time it will help. So try it different times and see what works best for you. My dr also recommended iron over the counter that is slow releasing gels. Good luck!!!

I take iron but it's a liquid called spartone you take it with pure orange

I take the slow release iron with a full meal. Sometimes I get a stomach ache but not as bad as when I took regular iron

Yes the prescription a dr gives is stronger than over the counter. The ones from supermarket won't improve your iron it's too low for that. My advice is these tablets are well known for giving you the runs or constipation. I don't know how many times a day you are meant to take them but just take 1 a day for a few days and see how you settle. If you tolerate it after a few days add another dose and keep doing that till you are taking the correct amount. If when you increase the side past 1 tablet a day you feel really ill again. Go back to one tablet and stick with that. 1 is better than none. Hope that makes sense. I'm meant to take 2 a day. I can usually tolerate this after birth but I'm struggling being pregnant so I just take 1 a day. I'm a nurse so understand sometimes the side effects are not nice but I bleed large amounts at birth so I need my iron levels boosted to try and help my body at birth keep a reasonable level of blood and be able to make more red blood cells to replace what I lose quickly without a blood transfusion if poSsibke

I found a liquid iron at Walgreens. Its in individual serving packs. I just dump it in oj and no issues.

Don't drink tea or coffee with or around the same time, they block absorption.

Try Slow Fe and take it with a glass of milk or juice, I take them and I don't feel any side effects, of course, drink plenty of water as well.

I found out I was anemic at like 30 weeks! I'm taking vitafol fe+ and they haven't given me any problems... I usually take them around bedtime, and I haven't experienced any soreness! Also as other have stated, make sure you take with vitamin C which helps with iron absorption!

If the iron is hard on your stomach, ask if you can do iron transfusions. They are so much better. Takes like an hour and you'll feel nauseous but a good nap after helps. If not try drinking orange juice when you take it, the acid helps break it down and take it at night so it will digest while you're sleeping.

They found my iron was low, so I started extra supplements twice a day. When they checked a month later, my levels went DOWN! So, I had to go to the cancer center to get IV iron infusions!! I'll know in a few days if the weekly infusions are working. Check with your doctor to see if there's something different you can be taking.
