Dogs: what's better?

Question

When is it better to get a dog? My boyfriend has insisted on buying one of those trained german shepherds but im kind of my own animal whisperer and have always trained my own dogs. Bottom line when is it better to bring a dog into the family?!

Depends... If baby is on the way, I say after! But if you're not quite there yet, getting a dog before having a baby can give you time for training. I certainly wouldn't do the two very close together.

Having a newborn and a new dog (puppy or not) sounds like a nightmare. I would wait until after baby is here so you can adjust to your new life and schedule. 
If you're early on in your pregnancy and getting an older dog I think it will be easier to adjust since you still have several months to go. If you're getting a puppy then definitely wait.

We've got a 14 month old German shepherd MAX 💜 and I've just found out I'm pregnant so he'll be about 2 years old when I have the baby! I voted for before the baby because from personal experience even though Max is well trained he's still just a puppy and being a German shepherd he has MEGA amounts of energy, doesn't know his own strength/size and is a handful! When he was a baby I was up every 3 hours all night long taking him out to the toilet so doing that with a baby as well would be so exhausting! When I have my Bub Max will be 2 years old which is about when the puppy energy slows down a fair bit and he won't be so boisterous so less chance of accidentally knocking me or the baby over lol

I got a puppy when I was in my two week wait when I was trying to get pregnant. As much as I love my wild little 5 pound furbaby If I could do it again I would of waited till the baby was older and potty trained. I'm so tired the last thing I want to do is walk the dogs or bend over and clean up pittle.

I'd say after, the dog may get jealous if you get it before baby as its a big transition for them. At least it will know from the start that the baby is there and won't change. A friend of mine just had to get rid of her dog after having her 3rd child, he was perfect with the other two as he joined the family when they were already here, when she had her third the dog was about 3, he growled a few times and tried to nip, he thought the baby was below him in the pecking order (baby and dog was not harmed).

Either or would probably be fine considering German Shephers listen very well, but I'm with you. I would want to train him myself. He will grow to listen to you and your commands and you wouldn't necessarily have to listen or follow the previous owners or trainers commands because everyone's commands and training ways are very different. 
You can get him before the baby is born so when the baby gets here, he is already part of the family and will grow up with the child. 
Or get him after and just let the child know to be easy with him at first. 
You will have to "train" the child and the dog either way you go about it, so they both learn respect for each other and no boundaries are crossed and neither the dog or baby get hurt somewhere down the line.

Our GS listens to us and our commands very well, but of course it took practice. When our baby gets here, I'm sure he will be very curious but he will listen to us and respect our baby! Just like our son will grow up to respect Cloud also. 😊😊
