Last week we found out our pregnancy was ectopic (3rd time).
I had emergency surgery to remove the tube which had not yet ruptured but did appear to have a good deal of scar tissue on the outside. We agreed to remove it because of my history with 2 precious ectopic pregnancies. (Lost the first tube in '14.) Post surgery I was informed that all went as planned and that I'd be an excellent candidate for IVF.
Fast forward a couple days- I get an email that my patient portal has been updated with a treatment summary and I go to view the report. This report refers to my surgery as that long name that means tube AND ovary removal. My husband calls the doc who says they did remove a small part of my ovary bc it came out with the tube, but not to worry because the ovary is almost entirely intact. Hmm...
I went straight to the hospital for all medical reports from my stay. The pathology report states they reviewed tissue including my entire ovary and notified the doctor of this. (He was not aware he removed my ovary?!?!)
I'm just livid. Devastated; feeling absolutely violated. I am supposed to have my first check up with this doctor on Thursday (1 week post surgery). I want to go elsewhere to be seen. What would you ladies do?
I know I could potentially have success with IVF with just one ovary, but I'm pissed as hell that my perfectly good ovary was removed by mistake. I'm worried about any other consequences of this- like hormones and additional medical expenses.
Has this happened to anyone else? Have any of you hired an attorney to pursue malpractice claims? Anyone in their 30s go on to conceive in-vitro with one ovary?
