As long as it's not bright red (although some women get that too and are still fine) & accompanied by intense cramping it's pretty common! Even though it's very common my doctor told me if I had any spotting or anything to give her a call anyways just to be safe.

It's never "normal" to have that happen, but it can happen and be just fine. However it also could indicate an issue. With a previous pregnancy I had a couple days of light brownish discharge and it was a missed miscarriage, that was my only symptom. So get checked out.
