contraction pains ?

Hi Everyone , so im a first time mom and im 35 weeks today . And ive been feeling since last week what i can only explain as period cramps and they've been coming and staying longer each time . When these pains come i also feel like (sorry for getting to detailed) but i feel like i have to poo or pass gas . Can someone tell me if this is what contractions feel like ?
