How do you choose the date you started ttc?

Weird question, I know but bare with me.  My SO and I stopped using contraceptives in January but i haven't been tracking anything until about a month ago...I was kind of hoping it would just happen instead of having to do any bbt and ovulation kits and such.   So have I still technically been trying since January or just a month?  It's a silly question but my friends are sick of me talking about babies by now lol...which is bad cuz I'm not even pregnant! :)
