The two week wait is the time between when you ovulated and when your body has *probably* had enough time to produce HCG levels high enough to be seen on a pregnancy test.

For example, most women ovulate around CD 14. Which means around CD 28 (or right around when you would get your period) is when you can take a pregnancy test and be reasonably sure you won't get a false negative.

This totally depends on the accuracy of your estimated day of ovulation (which if you're not keeping track via opks, BBT, CM, etc., might be earlier or later) and when the fertilized egg implants in your uterus (since HCG isnt produced until that happens). Because implantation varies (between 6 and 12 DPO) waiting a full two weeks takes in for account those variables.
