Can you get a tattoo if your breastfeeding?

There's no logical reason to not get tattooed in a reputable, well researched shop. The ink will not transfer to your milk. The FDA approved inks molecules are too big to transfer. The greatest concern is infection and statistically, infections occur more from improper aftercare than a reputable shop. I continue to stress reputable because where you get pierced/tattooed can make all the difference. Each state has different rules. Basic things to ask for: good lighting, available sink, separate no touch trash receptacles, metal (not plastic) used-tool tray with cover, nitrile gloves, separate modification areas, sterilization markers on packages, proper (labeled, not too full, translucent, biohazard marked) needle receiver with catch, EVERYTHING opened in front of you, knowledgeable staff, waiver you can understand, instructions on aftercare. Aftercare is on you and that is the only worrisome part of tattoos while pregnant or breastfeeding. Preventing infection is easy but if you can't make time to take care of it then don't get one till you can!
