Cheating Exes

So my first serious boyfriend and I were together for almost 2 years and he ended up cheating on me, I hated his guts after that. But now 2 years later I still haven't had another serious relationship and me and him are talking again and considering getting back together. Do you think people can change? Should I take the chance and hope he doesn't hurt me like he did before?
