Has anyone had an out of hospital birth?

This is my first pregnancy and my husband and I have decided to use a midwife and have our baby at a birthing center instead of at the hospital. Has anyone else used a midwife? How was your experience?

My mom had 7 home births. A nurse broke her ribs during the birth of her first at the hospital so she switched to home births with a midwife. We all came out alive. :)

I had an independent birth center birth with my son.

I had a midwife but in a hospital but she pretty much completely let me do whatever I wanted and left me alone (except for the Doppler every 15 minutes). So I walked around and knelt and squatted and I delivered on a pad on the floor. It was pretty much perfect. But it depends on the nurses you have. I also go to a moms group at a birthing center and those moms all seem to have enjoyed their births, though some tore badly and had to go in to the hospital to get stitched up after. But they all say they'd do it the same next time.

I'm planning on a birth center birth as long as my little man cooperates and decides to flip head down in time. I'm super excited and really hoping this baby gets on board with the plan!
