Retained placenta

Hey ladies! I'll get right to it. With my first I had a retained placenta that had to be manually removed. I had a partial epidural because I had failure to progress during labor. I am now pregnant with my second and my OB is heavily recommending getting an epidural again because there is an increased chance it could happen again. The thing is is that I REALLY want to try to go natural this time since I couldn't last time. So, I'm wondering who's had a retained placenta without an epidural? Are there other pain options? My OB talked to me about going back to the OR and being put under if I don't get an epidural and end up having a retained placenta. I don't want to bleed out or go to surgery or add any unneeded stress after baby is born. Any personal stories are welcome! Thanks!
