Can you ask to be induced into labor a bit before or on due date?

I'm asking because my mom in law said that for all her kids she was very uncomfortable the last few weeks of her pregnancy and she got induced around 38 weeks for them. Is that normal to be able to do that?

Most doctors won't because you being uncomfortable isn't a good reason to deliver before your baby is ready. Every week counts for your baby's development. A baby born at 38 weeks has not developed as much as one at 39, even though it's only a week.

I'd do some Google research on why it's important to get as close to term as possible. I'd wager having more information will sway you from even considering it. Also, induction ups your chances of having other problems, including a C section.

If done right induction is safe. And yes a lot of docs will ok you to be induced 1 week prior to your due date without medical reasons. Elective inductions are scheduled all the time. But 99% of the time it's after 39 weeks.

After being induced myself, I would never ask to be for any future pregnancies. I was induced for good  medical reason and it wasn't the best of labours.

I wasn't fully induced but I was given pitocin 24 hours after my water broke because I was only have very light and spread out contractions and that was bad enough. I wouldn't suggest it unless there's a medical reason that makes it an absolute necessity.

I think generally you can be induced early for medical complications. My doctor said he would induce me two nights ago as my placenta slightly detached. But that was only if I wanted to. I decided not to because I don't want to risk anything since I'm only 38 weeks. But usually they wait until longer to induce you if it's elective.

My doctor told me she could induce me today if i felt like it its my choice but there is a higher risk of c section and complications so i am waiting
